The 2012 HMUN delegation on the way to Boston.

By Spencer Freund

A little known club at Pomperaug High School is Model United Nations. This club is available to juniors and seniors who have an interest in current events or politics. Every year in January the club attends a conference hosted by Harvard University. This year’s meeting happens to be taking place this weekend. People from all around the world attend this conference, and it is meant to be a simulation of the real United Nations. Each school represents a single country, and members from each country meet in different committees and try to pass a resolution that deals with a real world problem. A delegate’s job is to try to get a resolution to pass that meets their own country’s interests. Therefore it is important that the delegates know their country’s interests as it relates to the issue, in addition to information about the country in general. Due to this, members of the club need to conduct extensive research on their country before they attend the conference. Pomperaug has been assigned the nation of Laos this year and members of the club have been researching this country since school began. Delegates also learn real life U.N. procedure and must write a position paper about one of the issues that they will be discussing. As a member of this club myself, I can tell you that it is a great way to learn about the U.N. and to make friends with similar interests. If you wish to be a part of this fantastic club next year, you must apply at the beginning of the upcoming school year. See Mr. Bass, the club’s advisor, at the beginning of next year for more details.
