Some members of the Living Poet Society at a recent meeting.

By Nicole Mulready

Meets: Every other Friday from 2:10-3:30 in Room 411

Advisor:Ms. Kelly

You may or may not have seen the 1989 film Dead Poets Society about an English teacher who inspires a group of private school students to love poetry and to seize the day. If you have, then you will likely recognize the name of one of the many clubs here at Pomperaug. The Living Poets Society is a writing and reading club run by Alyssa Hamilton, a senior at Pomperaug. She adapted the name of the club from the Dead Poets Society and changed it to “Living” because she “wanted people to get the sense that we’re a living, breathing group.”

Alyssa created the Living Poets Society last year after having gone to a creative writing class over the summer. She says, “The energy was so great and everyone was so brilliant, and I wanted that kind of group in the school.” Every other Friday after school, the group meets in Room 411 and shares written pieces of a variety of natures, from poems and short stories to chapters of books in the process of being written. Their hope is to get feedback on their work, both positive and constructive criticism. Some meetings throughout the year are “Prompt Days” where members share short writing prompts with the group and everyone writes for a short amount of time about it. There is also a day devoted to favorite books, where members are asked to share a favorite book with the group.

Alyssa also says that “the group is a very talented bunch, and many of our members got published in Abraxas last year. However, there is a great sense of humor in the group that comes from the like-minded atmosphere. It's a great place to develop your writing and make friends.” New members are welcome and the next meeting is October 14th. If you have a passion for writing and hearing what other talented writers in the school have created, stop by for a meeting!

Who are the people in the photo from left to right? Some of them look familiar but I can't quite put my finger on it.
