If you checked your Facebook status on December fifth, chances are you were greeted by a flood of statuses that pronounced the victory of Pomperaug over Hotchkiss in the recent math competition. For those who aren’t aware, Hotchkiss has been Pomperaug’s rival in the math competition for many years. Hotchkiss has won the majority of the past competitions, with Pomperaug coming in a close second place. After all these years of second places, the Pomperaug team certainly had a reason to celebrate over its win. Not only did Pomperaug win the competition, but Hotchkiss also came in third. When the Pomperaug’s win was announced, the team exploded into cheers and victory dances. I asked a few members of the math team how they felt when the results were announced. Senior mathlete Ishan Nag exclaimed, “It was a highlight of my high school career!” All of the other mathletes were just as thrilled by the win. One would have thought that our team had won the Super Bowl. In fact, the team celebrated so much after the win that the other schools began to give them weird looks, as if for some reason they couldn’t understand why someone would celebrate over math (It’s crazy, I know!). Nonetheless, this victory will certainly go down in mathlete history. Hopefully our math team will be able to continue their math dominance in the next competition.
