Seniors dressed up as senior citizens.

By Catrina Meyer

Spirit week is memorable every year, but this year the seniors took the week-long event into their own hands to make it even more spectacular. The weekend before spirit week, a Facebook group was created entitled, “We're Getting Old.” It was invitation only, so the creator invited his senior friends, and they invited theirs and so on, until most of the class was a part of the group. The instructions in the group’s description were to disregard the theme that was planned for Tuesday and to dress like seniorcitizens. Clever, right? Monday's pajama day went as planned. But on Tuesday, things were completely different and the rest of the school was shocked when seniors showed up in nursing home attire, mostly from the depths of their parents closets, complete with canes and walkers. There were many seniors, mostly those close to the epicenter of the event, who remained in character all day. Those were the people whole caused back-ups in every major hallway because of “bad backs.” And if you were lucky, you would occasionally hear comments about the war or whether passersby were selling chocolates. Nothing could top that day, right? Wrong.

That night the Facebook group was alive with comments about what a success the first day was and what we should do for the second. It was settled that it would be airport themed, meaning that half of the class would come in dressed in corporate attire and the other half as tourists. Sticking with our theme of acting like our characters, Wednesday was just as hilarious as Tuesday. The corporate “passengers” carried around old cell phones and shouted things like, “the numbers are dropping!” The tourists walked around with maps trying to find the best routes to their classes. Between both groups there was no shortage of luggage, and the administration kindly permitted the luggage and backpacks despite the violation of typical school policy. There was also a terminal set up outside of the AP room where all of the typical airport things were happening, namely tourists getting in the way of the businesspeople. During the announcements there was even announcement concerning one of our flights. But that isn’t even the best part! Though it carried a bit of spite, a highlight of the day was that we carried our passports as if they were real passports. Following all of this excitement, costume day was almost a let down.

The simple Facebook group had an almost miraculous effect on the class of 2012. After a sub-par turnout at our sophomore fashion show, people doubted that our class had any spirit. But this week proves that accusation wrong by a mile. We came together through the magic of social media and forged our camaraderie as a class. In the past there have been class pranks that brought classes together, but in lieu of that we had our spirit week. After Wednesday, the Facebook group was even more alive than on Wednesday night and it continued on through the weekend, with people proclaiming their love for our class. There even may be plans to have other theme days in the future, but hush, it will be a surprise.

People have also used the Facebook group to rally up for creating our stellar class wall and the big football game last Saturday. And after the guest appearance of a group of cronies at the pep rally, there is no doubt that the class of 2012 will go down in Pomperaug history.
