The clock buzzes and the score reads 71-59, Stanford Cardinals to UConn Huskies in women’s college basketball. Okay, that’s a pretty big margin, but why is it this game that will make Connecticut’s history for years to come? UConn girls have gone undefeated for 90 consecutive games, and this game on December 30, 2010, ended their winning streak.

UConn fans will still boast about this record, which breaks the previous one that the all-star team last set with a huge 70-game winning streak. In fact, this astonishing achievement broke the record for all NCAA basketball teams, including the men’s UCLA game in 1974. Interestingly enough, the last time that the Huskies were defeated was by Stanford in the Final Four Game, where they were beat 73-82. Ironically, the last team to beat UConn before their streak began was the same team who let it come to an end.

However, the game itself might be a letdown for UConn’s die-hard fans. Stanford was up from the start, holding at least a 13-point lead for nearly the entire duration of the game. From then on, UConn never caught up, sending their scores even more downhill.

Star UConn player Maya Moore played hard, making ESPN stats with her eight rebounds and two steals. However, some Huskies fans say that Moore has been doing all of the work for the team. Though she’s considered a phenomenal basketball player and is extremely well known for her talents, Maya Moore’s skills were not enough to give UConn a victory.

The Stanford team was especially hopeful to be victorious in the recent game, still holding a reasonable grudge for the championship game that they lost to UConn. As the clock buzzed and their fans dressed head to toe in red rejoiced, Stanford knew they had finally made the history that they hoped for.
