In September 2009, the first episode of a new show called Glee aired on Fox. I remember sitting on my couch, watching it and thinking, “Wow… this is sort of extremely stupid.” So, click, I turned it off and didn’t watch the rest of the season. I never imagined the show would turn into a huge phenomenon with an enormous collection of fans. Now, two years later, Glee has made it to its third season and has millions of faithful viewers every week, including myself. Although there have only been three episodes in so far, I can already tell this is going to be a crazy year!
If you don’t watch the show, let me just fill you in on what you’re missing. Glee is basically about a glee club called the New Directions, from a high school in Ohio, whose members are looked down upon by their classmates and who are thought of as a bunch of losers. What their peers don’t realize is that glee club is full of talented, yet sometimes overly dramatic, teenagers that use singing as a way of expressing themselves. The show incorporates problems that real teenagers deal with including questions of sexuality, peer pressure, and finding where you really belong. Some topics the show has covered, such as drinking, partying, and same-sex couples, are thought to be controversial by some people, but I personally think that if you’re at least twelve years old and your parents approve, you should definitely be fine watching it!
So far this season, we have seen new sides of the characters we have grown to love (or hate). (Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t watched the episodes yet and you plan to, don’t read the rest of this paragraph!) We have also been introduced to new faces, such as the annoying Sugar Motta who is rejected from the glee club and has Rachel’s mother, Shelby Corcoran, start a new club just for her. I am interested to see where this goes, seeing as at the end of episode three, Mercedes leaves the New Directions and joins Shelby’s glee club. There is also a new man in Mercedes’s life, Marcus, who has so far shown that he is a very supportive and loving boyfriend. I am so happy that she finally got a guy, but my first thought during the premiere episode was, “Where is Sam?!?!”. I was not aware of the fact that he was just a temporary character on the show, but I think he will truly be missed. I also LOVE the fact that Blaine has transferred to McKinley! I am so excited to see more of him, and of course of Klaine/Klurt/Kurt CoBlaine! I also love Rachel and Finn so far; it seems like they have resolved all of their issues of trust and cheating! There are also new troubles arising for Quinn, who is now haunted by her choice of giving up her baby. Two years ago, she made the difficult decision of allowing Shelby to adopt the baby that she had with her fellow glee club member, Noah Puckerman. The child, named Beth, is now two years old. Quinn is now trying to convince Puck that they should try to get full custody, but Puck really just wants to be a good influence in Beth’s life. I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens!
Overall, season three of Glee is looking amazing so far! There’s all new drama, some new faces, and some new couples! So seriously, if you don’t watch Glee already, you definitely should start. It’s on Tuesdays at 8pm on Fox! If you love music, comedy and drama, this is the perfect show for you! So watch a few episodes and then tell me, are YOU a Gleek?
