Occupy Wall Street Protests Take Over New York
For the past few weeks, protesters have gathered in New York in a movement being called Occupy Wall Street. They are protesting against corporate greed and economic inequality, among other general concerns. This past weekend, nearly 700 protesters were arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge after they set out to march across it and blocked the street. They were nearly all released by Sunday with citations for disorderly conduct. The Occupy Wall Street movement has since started to spread across the country, with protests popping up in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. this past week.
Dr. Conrad Murray on Trial
After pop superstar Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, shock and outrage poured over America when it was learned that he died due to a lethal dose of Propofol. Currently, Jackson’s private doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray, is on trial. Charged with involuntary manslaughter, Dr. Murray has been listening to the prosecution’s witness’s state that by the time Michael Jackson arrived in the Emergency Room that night, he was already “clinically dead,” meaning there was no pulse.
Amanda Knox Appeal
For the 24-year-old American Amanda Knox, judgment day came a lot sooner than it will for most people. After being sentenced to 26 years in an Italian prison after her murder conviction of her British roommate, she won her appeal on October 3rd. Knox was convicted of murdering her roommate in a 2009 trial. This trial has sparked international controversy due to the mishandling of the evidence by the Italian police. After being acquitted of the murder in an Italian court, she left her prison and boarded a flight to return to the United States on Tuesday morning.
Father Found Alive after Cliff Plunge
After searching the woods and ravine at the bottom of a cliff for six days, a family received the best news of their lives last weekend. After his car plunged off a 200 -foot cliff, the 67-year-old father was found alive in California. His family members were the ones to find their father after six days of an exhausting search and rescue effort of every ravine in the area. The father stayed alive by making a nature camp, eating leaves and drinking river water, as he told his daughter after he was found.
Tainted Cantaloupes
While many people believe that eating fruit will keep you healthy, lately that has not been the case. After a string of deaths, 19 states have been named in a deadly Listeria outbreak here in the United States. This particular outbreak has been caused by tainted cantaloupes that have somehow gotten into the food supply of people in 19 states. Listeria is a virus that can be incubated for months and generally affects those with poor immune systems, such as the elderly. This outbreak has already claimed many lives and all Americans are being warned not to eat cantaloupe for some time.
